Come and enjoy this unique journey, exploring not only the rich history of Lisbon but also the fascinating gems that surround it.
On November 1st, 1755, a powerful 8.5 magnitude earthquake originated offshore, devastating Lisbon. Although the exact death toll remains uncertain, it is estimated that approximately 30,000 people lost their lives. The reconstruction of the city was entrusted to the then Prime Minister, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, known as the Marquês de Pombal. With the collaboration of internationally renowned architects, he designed a revitalized Baixa, modern and neoclassical in architecture.
Avenida da Liberdade, a Lisbon icon, initially intended to be a public promenade, resembles the Champs-Élysées in Paris, boasting international stores and holding the most expensive square meter in Portugal and one of the most expensive in Europe, incorporating earthquake-resistant construction techniques.
Another significant date in Portugal is April 25, 1974, when a military coup overthrew the Estado Novo dictatorship, a fascist regime led by Salazar. The coup, led by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), became internationally known as the Carnation Revolution. During the celebrations, the population offered red carnations to the soldiers, who placed them in the barrels of their rifles.
