Itinerary
Our private and fully flexible Lisbon and Óbidos Tour will provide a unique experience starting in Óbidos, a town considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this picturesque destination, we will take a real journey back to the medieval period, exploring its charming narrow, whitewashed streets.
Óbidos played an important role in the defensive pentagon of the five castles, a strategy led by the Templars. Later, it became a wedding gift from King Dinis to his wife Queen Isabel, and the town became part of the Queen’s Estate. Many Portuguese queens settled here, contributing to its development and leaving a significant legacy. For example, Queen Catarina ordered the construction of the aqueduct and fountains that can still be admired today.
Additionally, during our tour, we will have the opportunity to discover one of the region’s most famous and appreciated liqueurs: Ginja of Óbidos. This traditional drink is a true delight for the senses and a delicious way to immerse yourself in the local culture.
Ready for a fascinating journey?
A truly complete visit to any place includes exploring its gastronomy and sweets. In Portugal, a country with a rich culinary tradition, you can’t miss the chance to taste the famous Ginja of Óbidos. This cherry liqueur is a true local treasure. We recommend trying it with a chocolate cup for an even more delicious experience. Be sure to include this tasting on our tour of the charming medieval town of Óbidos.
The area most devastated by the great earthquake of 1755 that struck Lisbon is crucial to understanding the importance of Pombaline architecture. After the disaster, the buildings were rebuilt in a radically different way, adopting an innovative anti-seismic approach for the 18th century. The Marquis of Pombal, a key statesman of the time, was responsible not only for the reconstruction of Lisbon but also for the economic and social changes that emerged after the earthquake.
During our tour, we will cross the Avenida da Liberdade towards the Marquis of Pombal Square. At this point, we will stop at Eduardo VII Park to reflect on the relationship and treaties between Portugal and England, and how this relationship significantly impacted the future of Brazil. In addition, we will be able to enjoy the stunning view this location offers.
On our Lisbon and Óbidos Tour, we will now explore the oldest part of Lisbon, Alfama. Known for its winding alleys and narrow streets, this former Arab Medina was moved to another hill after the Christian reconquest in the 12th century, giving way to the Mouraria district. Exploring Alfama is diving into Portuguese authenticity. This neighborhood is the birthplace of fado, the typical and charismatic Portuguese music, known for its strange melancholy, referred to by the Portuguese as “saudade.”
Next, we will visit the São Jorge Castle, one of the few remaining physical traces of the Arab civilization in Portugal. After the visit, we head towards the Baixa, where we will stop to admire the imposing Lisbon Cathedral, built in the 12th century in Romanesque architecture. We will also have the opportunity to visit the birthplace of Saint Anthony, the Portuguese-born saint known for helping couples get married.
Now it’s time to climb another of Lisbon’s hills and explore two neighborhoods so different and yet so alike: Bairro Alto and Chiado. Bairro Alto is known for its network of streets that turn into lively meeting spots during weekends, attracting thousands of young people who come to enjoy the bohemian atmosphere of this neighborhood. On the other hand, Chiado is known for its culture and art, with a significant concentration of theaters in Lisbon and some of the oldest bookstores in the modern world.
During our tour, we will have the opportunity to explore these two vibrant areas of the city, each with its own unique and charming atmosphere.
Continuing towards Belém, a true open book during the Portuguese maritime expansion period, where the old shipyards and ports of Lisbon witnessed the departure of brave Portuguese explorers in the 15th century, discovering sea routes to India, Africa, and Brazil. This is a place that celebrates Portugal’s glorious past, driven by the vast wealth that flowed into the country from its colonies.
During our tour, we will visit three iconic monuments: the Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, and the Monument to the Discoveries. Finally, we will stop at the factory of the famous Pastéis de Belém, where we will have the opportunity to taste this fabulous conventual pastry that attracts millions of people every year. Join us for a unique experience on our Lisbon and Óbidos Tour.
