Fátima offers visitors a profound experience of spirituality and reflection. The Wax Museum, which depicts the visions of the shepherd children, and the House of the Shepherds, where the three visionaries lived, are also places of interest.
Fatima and Coimbra Tour: History, Culture, and Spirituality
After Fatima, we head to Coimbra, a city of great historical and cultural significance. Famous for its University, one of the oldest in Europe, Coimbra was home to several kings and queens of Portugal. The Joanina Library, with its ancient books and impressive architecture, and the Sala dos Capelos, where doctoral ceremonies take place, are just a few of the many historical treasures of the city.
The Old Cathedral of Coimbra, a Romanesque cathedral from the 12th century, and the Santa Clara-a-Velha Monastery, with its medieval architecture, are other must-see sites. The city also offers stunning views of the Mondego River, and its narrow winding streets invite for peaceful strolls full of history.
With a unique combination of spirituality, medieval history, and university tradition, the Fatima and Coimbra Tour is an enriching experience for anyone wanting to discover the best of Portugal in a single day. Departing from Lisbon, you will experience the culture, faith, and historical legacy of these two essential landmarks.
Itinerary
Departing early from Lisbon, in about an hour we will arrive at Fátima, one of the most important Marian sanctuaries in the world. We will visit the Basilicas of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Holy Trinity, as well as the iconic Chapel of the Apparitions.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, built in 1928 in neo-baroque architecture, houses the tombs of the three shepherd children: Francisco, Jacinta, and, more recently, Sister Lúcia. On the other side, the impressive Basilica of the Holy Trinity, designed by Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis and completed in 2007, offers a contemporary architectural experience with more than 8,000 seats.
At the heart of the sanctuary is the Chapel of the Apparitions, the oldest and most significant structure, an unmissable place for its historical and spiritual importance. A visit to Fátima is a unique tribute to the Virgin Mary, where faith and architecture intertwine in a remarkable way.
In addition to the basilicas, be sure to visit the simple houses where the children of Fátima lived in Valinhos, just a few kilometers from the Sanctuary. These homes, open to the public free of charge, offer a glimpse into the humble lives they led, enriching the experience with valuable context about the Marian apparitions. This brief visit provides a deeper understanding of the history and devotion connected to Fátima.
While in this region, you can’t miss one of the local delicacies: the famous Leitão à Bairrada. This suckling pig is slow-roasted for about two hours in a wood-fired oven, using wood from vines pruned during the season. Accompanied by a sparkling wine from the same region, this culinary delight offers a unique experience that highlights the authentic and traditional flavors of Bairrada. Take the opportunity to savor this authentic local dish and enjoy the rich cuisine of the region.
While exploring the city of Coimbra, a must-see stop is at the University Palace, where the Joanina Library stands out as an architectural and cultural gem. Construction of the library began in 1717 and was completed in 1728, housing the university library of Coimbra. The grandeur of the Joanina Library is revealed not only in its architecture but also in its literary treasures. The ceiling frescoes, painted by renowned masters António Ribeiro and Vicente Nunes, add a unique touch of beauty. Also notable is the portrait of King João V, created by Italian artist Domenico Dupra.
If visiting the interior of the University, including the Joanina Library, is a priority for you, we recommend notifying us when booking your Fátima and Coimbra Tour. Tickets for the Joanina Library are limited, and without advance booking, it may be difficult to secure a visit at your desired time. Please note there is an additional cost of €15 per person for the library visit, which will be charged to the client at the end of the tour, even in case of cancellation or delay.
After appreciating the Joanina Library, we will continue to explore other fascinating sites at the University of Coimbra, such as the Chapel of São Miguel, the Capelos Hall, and the “Goat” Tower, providing a complete and enriching experience in the historic city of Coimbra.
A visit to Coimbra’s Baixa, or Historic Center, offers a charming experience in the city’s central area. This name originated from the separation between the “Alta,” inhabited by the nobility, clergy, and later students, and the “Baixa,” which became known for its commerce, crafts, and riverside neighborhoods.
As you explore this area, you’ll find narrow streets, charming alleys, and picturesque squares, where numerous cafés, pastry shops, and restaurants invite moments of relaxation. Coimbra’s Baixa is rich in culture and offers unforgettable gastronomy. As a commercial hub for hundreds, if not thousands of years, it retains a genuine atmosphere and unique character.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Church of Santa Cruz, where the tomb of Portugal’s first king, Dom Afonso Henriques, rests. This historic site adds an extra layer of cultural significance to Coimbra’s Baixa, making the visit even more enriching and memorable.
