During the trip, you’ll have the chance to taste traditional conventual sweets, famous for their generous use of egg yolks. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages when egg whites were used to starch clothes, and the surplus yolks were turned into desserts. This made Portugal one of the largest egg producers in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries.
These sweets, made in convents and monasteries, became known as conventual sweets, with the Pastel de Belém being the most famous.
