From the Romans to the Muslim period, passing through the Christian reconquest, without forgetting the epic period of the Portuguese Discoveries, all these are reasons for a visit to the Algarve, with millennial traces from the Neolithic to our days.

On the route of different civilizations, as a connection always facilitated by the immense sea, evidenced by five centuries of Arab influence marked this region forever, starting with its own name: Al-Gharb, the Occident.Presence, which lasted from the 16th century VIII to the century XIII, visible even today, in the names of villages, in agriculture, in the architecture of monuments, in the lace of terraces and chimneys, or in the white of lime so characteristic of buildings.

At the beginning of the Portuguese maritime expansion in the 15th century, Lagos and Sagres became famous through Infante D. Henrique, the world-famous Sagres school makes the Algarve a place to explore, its fantastic white sand beaches and its history, came with us in our three days private tour in Algarve.

Lisbon - Evora - Monsaraz - Algarve

Departure from Lisbon crossing the beautiful suspension bridge, admiring the city and telling one soon to the monument to Christ-King. The path that leads to the Algarves, offers a landscape of white houses with large chimneys and a plain covered with olive trees, vineyards and cork oaks that so much lends us with its cork. We Arrive to the historic city of Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, where we will visit a cork factory no doubt one of the most “Portuguese” products and coveted throughout the world. Evora authentically a live-museum town, has maintained its traditional charm in historic center, inside the Vauban style walls built in the 17th century following the design of the French engineer Nicolas de Langres, here we will visit its historical center, as well as the Roman ruins (Temple of Diana), Giraldo Square and of course the Bones Chapel, with the walls and pillars lined with human bones and skulls, is estimated to be over 5,000 monks, at the entrance of it we will find “We will wait for your bones” We then go to Monsaraz this authentic Medieval village, where its Castle played for several centuries the role of sentinel of the River Guadiana, guarding the border with Spain.

2º Day

The Algarve

Departure from the hotel to visit beautiful beaches and Algarve excellent summer conditions, we will pass by Oura beach, Olhos de Agua until we reach Vilamoura, with its luxurious marina, hotels and its casino. Then we pass and whenever possible visit the beautiful church in Almancil filled with tiles from the Baroque period, hence the expression “gold on blue”. And from here to Sagres where we will take our boat trip (weather permitting) and  Sao Vicente Cape, where the School of Navigation of the Infante D. Henrique awaits us, in the Fortress of Sagres built to support the sailors who doubled the cable and remained sheltered in the bays and coves of Sagres, until the conditions of navigation were favorable, a strategic point of passage for commercial vessels that made the connection between the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic, in addition to its proximity to the North of Africa. Now yes, we will enjoy the Algarve’s beaches, golf courses, travel back in time and feel the five centuries of Muslim heritage through its white houses and the trap of roofs and chimneys, which we can so well see in the city of Lagos, local of bad memory of the slave market and that there are still its walls, We return to Albufeira with stop in the fortress of Santa Catarina in the Beach of the Rock. Rest, eat and have fun, because here the nights are never old.

Return to Lisbon

We left our hotel in the Algarve to visit Silves, which was one of the most important Muslim cities in the Algarve, devastated by the earthquake of 1755 that had its epicenter near Sagres, visible remains of Muslims heritage in their construction, castle and church. On the way back to Lisbon we stop for a good sardine in Setubal, and from here we cross Arrábida Park, with a majestic view of the Atlantic and the Peninsula of Troia, that James Bond was in the 007 “at the service of his majesty”, then we go to Piriquita winery and there we get lost in a guided tour between tunnels and barrels, until the throat refreshes with a couple of glasses of wine.

Walkborder Tours is an excellent company to work with as they cater the tour to your needs and make the most of your time. The vans are spacious and they have water and Wifi available. Guides are extremely well versed in Portugal’s history, so not only do you get to see the sights, but learn in depth about them
