Douro Valley Tour, the sublimed Douro. The prodigy of a landscape….It’s not about the panorama before our eyes, it’s simple an excess of nature… a geological poeme. It’s absolute beauty.”, this how Miguel Torga – one of the greatest twentieth century portuguese poets – describes the Douro Valley.

Alto Douro Vinhateiro is known as the oldest demarcated wine region in the world where the Douro River did its “work” digging deep valleys in the earth, while the schist mountains were transformed by the man who planted the vineyard, green in the summer, fire color in autumn.

A wisdom inherited from many generations, tilting the terraces so that the rays of sun embrace the vines and give the grapes the warmth that the wine needs, making this territory and especially its wines known all over the world.

Marao, the name of the mountain range that will takes us to Amarante, our first stop will be in Amarante where we can pray to a well-known matchmaker saint, Sao Gonçalo de Amarante.

In Amarante historical center, will witness several examples of Romanesque architecture and middle age buildings, along the Saint Goncalo bridge you can enjoy some of the most touristic points of the city such as the Saint Goncalo Church and Convent, the Amadeu de Souza-Cardoso Museum as well as the XVIII century bridge that joins the banks of the Tamega river, the largest tributary of the Douro river.

On the weekends we see vendors everywhere selling the Saint Gonçalo local sweets with a phallic appearance, causing curiosity and laughter, even the name of this “weird” local sweet makes people laugh… they are popularly called “quilhõezinhos de S. Gonçalo”. Theres a long tradition in Amarante that says that in saint Gonçalo celebrations (June), young people offer those sweets to the girls they want to conquer.

Casal de Loivos

What a view, from Casal de Loivos and admire a breathtaking view, between mountains and valleys designed by man in tune with nature considered by many the best view in all of the Douro Valley.

Pinhao Train Station

Next on our Douro Valley Tour we visit the Pinhao train station where the 24 tile panels show us the old artisanal way of winemaking in t
his region World heritage Site by UNESCO since 2001, being the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, established in the 10th of September of 1756 by the Portuguese Prime Minister at the time, Mr. Marquis de Pombal.

Boat Ride ( Optional )

Here you will be given the option to take a boat tour on board of a Rabelo boat (name of the old boats that carried the wine casks down the river to the wine cellars in Gaia).

Navigating the calm waters of the Douro River admiring the magnificent landscapes carved by some Master of the Renascence is indeed a unique and unforgettable experience.

Visit and Tasting

Now the reason that brought us to the Douro Valley, a visit and degustation in a Quinta ( a winemaker ), where we will make you understand whole process, from cultivation, pruning, harvesting, to the long-awaited final product of, the wine, surely at the end all will have the same opinion, how difficult it is to produce wine in this beautiful region.

The choice of the winery will be exclusively from Walkborder, in case you wish to visit a specific winery, the change can be done according with the schedule, but in this the payment will be done by the costumer.

Mateus Palace Optional

Optionally and according to our time, we can visit the Mateus Palace ( entrances not include), and admire one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Portugal, with its gardens and history.

In this Palace or Manor was “created” the famous Mateus Rose wine, known worldwide as the rose wine or even, by the shape of the bottle, a mansion of Baroque architecture built in the XVIII century by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, undoubtedly one of the most elegant mansions in Europe in this period, one of the biggest attractions a fantasist garden, with formations and rows of hedges, carved statues and a harmonious cypress side walk.

The tour was very good. Joaquim is very attentive and pleasant. He made a point of presenting us with all the good that was on the way and told us a lot about the history of Portugal. We will certainly combine other scripts. We highly recommend it!

We did the Douro Valley Tour in 3 couples.
It was great!
Amarante is beautiful, it looks like a movie set.
The house of Matthew with its gardens is stunning!
In Pinhão, we had lunch and then we went to a farm, reserved by the guide.
We were very well received and guided, in the end had tastings with a lovely view to the valley!
The Pinhão station is small, but beautiful with the tiles showing the vintage.
Our guide was very friendly and helpful with plenty of knowledge of the stories and pecularities of the places visited
