Itinerary

Day 1:
Aveiro – City Center

Explore Aveiro, the Portuguese Venice, with canals that were once routes for salt and seagrass transportation. Discover its historic center, filled with Art Nouveau buildings, including the market designed by Gustavo Eiffel. Delight in the traditional “ovos moles” and take a Moliceiro boat ride through the picturesque canals. Don’t miss visiting the salt pans, witnesses of the old salt industry and codfish salting.

Day 2:
Costa Nova

The famous palheiros of Costa Nova, originally black and red fishing warehouses, have become colorful summer houses, reflecting the bourgeois fashion of the time.

Day 3:
Lunch in Mealhada (optional)

Another highlight of this region is the famous Leitão da Mealhada. A piglet roasted in a wood-fired oven for over two hours, making the meat tender and the skin extremely crispy.

Day 4:
Coimbra – University

The University of Coimbra, built on the old Royal Palace, has been a historical landmark since the founding of Portugal. The 18th-century Joanina Library is the highlight, with its Baroque architecture and remarkable literary collection. To ensure your visit, book tickets in advance.

Coimbra – Downtown

The downtown area of Coimbra, once a medieval suburb, is now the vibrant heart of the city. The Old Square, the cradle of development, houses the iconic Church of Santa Cruz, where the first King of Portugal is buried.
