Douro Valley Tour, the sublimed Douro. The prodigy of a landscape….It’s not about the panorama before our eyes, it’s simple an excess of nature… a geological poeme. It’s absolute beauty.”, this how Miguel Torga – one of the greatest twentieth century portuguese poets – describes the Douro Valley.

Alto Douro Wine Region known for being the oldest demarcated wine region in the World where the Douro River did its “work” digging deep valleys in the land, while the shale mountains were transformed by the man who planted the vine, green in summer, fire color in autumn.
A wisdom inherited between many generations, tilting the terraces so that the rays of the sun embrace the vines and give the grapes the warmth that the wine needs, making this territory and above all its wines known throughout the world.
Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in the category of Evolutionary and Live Cultural Landscape, on December 14, 2001, the Alto Douro Wine Region with approximately 24,000 hectares and among them the municipalities of Alijó, Armamar, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Lamego, Mesão Frio, Peso da Régua, Sabrosa, Santa Marta de Penaguião, São João da Pesqueira, Tabuaço, Torre de Moncorvo, Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Vila Real.
Its terraces, built in the 70s, with new techniques for planting the vine, on high levels, with shale walls delimiting each level, constitute alteration of the landscape by human activity, which does not interfere in the landscape or geology of the same.
Come and see this beautiful region on our Douro Valley Tour.
Marao, the name of the mountain range that will takes us to Amarante, our first stop will be in Amarante where we can pray to a well-known matchmaker saint, Sao Gonçalo de Amarante.
In Amarante historical center, will witness several examples of Romanesque architecture and middle age buildings, along the Saint Goncalo bridge you can enjoy some of the most touristic points of the city such as the Saint Goncalo Church and Convent, the Amadeu de Souza-Cardoso Museum as well as the XVIII century bridge that joins the banks of the Tamega river, the largest tributary of the Douro river.
On the weekends we see vendors everywhere selling the Saint Gonçalo local sweets with a phallic appearance, causing curiosity and laughter, even the name of this “weird” local sweet makes people laugh… they are popularly called “quilhõezinhos de S. Gonçalo”.
Theres a long tradition in Amarante that says that in saint Gonçalo celebrations (June), young people offer those sweets to the girls they want to conquer.
Entering the Alto Douro Wine Region, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, more precisely in Peso da Regua, also known as the world capital of wine and vineyards.
In this region the famous Rabelos boats left in ancient times in February, transporting Port wine in barrels to the Gaia pier in Oporto so that they could age in the cellars and from there travel to the whole world.
At about 20 kilometers and following the N222 road, which in 2015 won the international title of the best road in the world, a beautiful road always along the Douro River where we arrive at Pinhao.
Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful attractions in Pinhao will be the railway station, where its 24 tile panels representing the production of wine and of course Port wine, this region was considered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2001, we also find here several restaurant suggestions for lunch in one of its typical restaurants.
Now the reason that probably brought us to the Douro Valley, the visit a winery, that is included in this tour, where we will understand this whole process, from cultivation, pruning, harvesting, to the long awaited final product, wine and for sure that in the end we will jointly have the same opinion, as much as it costs to produce it, it is clear that in addition to so much talk, it is time to try the same.
The choice of the fifth to visit is exclusively the Walkborder, if you want to change it, you can do it, however the cost becomes the responsibility of the customer.
Another option for our Tour will be a visit to Mateus Palace, so that we can admire one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in Portugal, the Mateus Palace or Solar de Mateus (tickets not included) where the famous Mateus Rose wine originated.
A mansion of baroque architecture built in the 18th century by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, undoubtedly one of the most elegant mansions in Europe of that period, one of the greatest attractions is a fantasy garden, with formations and rows of hedges, sculpted statues and a harmonious cypress walkway .
