A must in Coimbra will be the “Biblioteca Joanina”, a library built in the 18th century in the reign of the Portuguese King D. João V, its baroque interior divided into three quadrangular rooms with perfect arches where we can see university emblems in gilded carving, surpassed by royal crown of the Portuguese King D. João V.
From the richness of materials to the artistic refinement of baroque decoration, the Joanina Library has some of the rarest and most important books in Portugal, without doubt a true artistic temple devoted to human knowledge.
In Fatima, we also suggest a visit to the Church of the Holy Trinity inaugurated in 2007, due to the increase of pilgrims in Fatima since 1973 that was “thought” in the construction of this modern Basilica of circular format and white color, the stone that covers it is from this region and known as white sea, with a capacity for 8,633 people.
With a diameter of about 125 meters, this imposing building can also divide its interior into two parts through a movable wall, a church for everyone, as they have a capacity of 76 seats for people with motor difficulties.
Come and visit these two fantastic cities on our Private Coimbra and Fatima Tour, without leaving your hotel in Oporto.
In about one hour we arrive at Coimbra, starting the visit by the Library inside the Coimbra University, the construction of the Joanine library began in the year 1717, over the old prison of the Royal Palace, and was completed in 1728.
The Joanine Library is recognized as one of the most original and spectacular European baroque libraries. The master of works was Joao Carvalho Ferreira. It´s decoration was only realized some years later, already on the eve of the Pombaline Reformation: the frescoes of the ceilings and cimalhas were executed by António Simões Ribeiro, painter, and Vicente Nunes, gilder.
The celebrated portrait of King D. João V is attributed to the Italian Domenico Dupra and the painting and gilding of the shelves was carried out by Manuel da Silva.
The “Baixa de Coimbra” or Historic Center of Coimbra is the denomination given to the central zone of the city of Coimbra, in Portugal.
The designation was developed with the separation of the “High”, where lived the nobility, the clergy and, later, the students and the “Baixa”, dominated by commerce, crafts and neighborhoods.
Today, both are privileged places of the city, where services (banking, insurance, commerce), centuries of history, housing, culture, green spaces and leisure are mixed. It is here that you can find a part of the civic center of the city, the big shopping streets (such as Rua Ferreira Borges), the Municipal Market D.Pedro V, Coimbra train station and important monuments such as the Santa Cruz Monastery.
On this day we suggest to have lunch already in Fatima, the ” Tia Alice” restaurant is one of the great Portuguese “ambassadors” with famous dishes Cod fish, among others make it famous allover Portugal, we are here to help you choose.
Fatima Shrine considered by many one of the most important Marian Shrines in the world, where we will pay homage to Lady Mary, in the Cova da Iria through the visit to the two Basilicas there; Our Lady of the White Rosary, Holy Trinity and the Chapel of the Apparitions.
The Chapel of the Apparitions as the first Chapel to be built shortly after the apparitions, located in the center of the Sanctuary is a place not to be missed, not for grandeur, but for the meaning, it is mandatory to visit it.
At one end the Basilica of Our Lady of the white Rosary , built in 1928 with a neo-baroque architecture, here you will find the tombs of the three little shepherd children (Francis and Jacinta), and now also the tomb of Sister Lucia, in the other end the imposing Basilica of the Holy Trinity, built in 2007 with more than 8,000 seats and 40,000 m² of area designed by the Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis.
Just a few minutes driving from the Sanctuary we will visit the homes where the children lived (Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia de Jesus), in Valinhos, there homes extremely well preserved, and from where every day they took the animals to the place where the sanctuary exists today.
In these homes we can observe and imagine the way of life of these families in this time of the miracle of Fatima. Our days, one of Lucia de Jesus’s nieces lives next to one of the houses.
