Amarante and the Heritage of São Gonçalo

In its historic center, striking Romanesque facades and medieval stone houses gaze beautifully onto the banks of the Tâmega River. Crossing the iconic São Gonçalo Bridge, we find the grand Church and Convent dedicated to the saint, alongside the prestigious Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Municipal Museum. Discover the rich local customs and the unique traditional pastries that give Amarante its highly regarded culinary identity.

Day 3:
Peso da Régua: The Capital of the Vine and Wine

Entering the heart of the Alto Douro Wine Region, we arrive at Peso da Régua, historically recognized as the world capital of vineyards and wine. It was from this vital trading hub that traditional Rabelo boats used to set sail, heavily loaded with barrels of Port wine, navigating the challenging waters of the Douro River down to the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. It is a journey deeply rooted in history, where each vineyard-covered hillside showcases centuries of human passion and dedication.

Day 4:
Pinhão and the Best Road in the World

Driving along the legendary N222 scenic route—globally acclaimed as one of the best and most beautiful drives in the world for its sweeping curves following the riverbed—we reach Pinhão, a true waterfront gem. The crowning jewel of the village is its magnificent Railway Station, decorated with 24 gorgeous tile panels depicting harvest traditions and Douro valley heritage. This region, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, provides unforgettable views and excellent local dining spots.

Day 5:
Cruising the Douro: Traditional Rabelo Boat Trip (Optional)

To fully enrich your experience in the Douro Valley, we offer the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing panoramic cruise aboard a traditional Rabelo boat, lasting approximately one hour. This peaceful river journey (not included in the tour price) offers a privileged perspective of the valley from the calm waters of the Douro River, allowing you to gaze up at the vast terraced vineyards sloping dramatically down the hillsides.

Day 6:
Private Tour and Tasting at a Douro Wine Estate

We reach the true highlight of our itinerary: an intimate exploration inside a prestigious estate (Quinta), entirely included in your private tour. Here, you will uncover the complete artisanal and technical lifecycle of wine production, from the year-round care of the vines and the manual grape harvest to the slow aging process in historic barrels. Following the educational tour, indulge in a premium guided tasting to savor the rich, complex flavors of the fine DOC and Port wines produced on this unique soil. (Note: The selection of the estate is carefully managed by Walkborder; if you prefer a specific estate of your own choosing, any additional costs and booking terms will be assumed by the client).

Day 7:
Casal de Loivos Viewpoint: A Breathtaking Panorama

Before beginning our return drive, we ascend to the spectacular Casal de Loivos Viewpoint to experience one of the most iconic and photographed panoramic vistas in the world. From this high headland, you can watch the Douro River map out a perfect loop between terraced mountains that roll out as far as the eye can see. It is a striking landscape that perfectly showcases the harmony between human hard work and the majesty of Mother Nature.

Day 8:
Mateus Palace (Optional)

Another option for our tour is a visit to Mateus Palace, where we can admire one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in Portugal. Also known as Solar de Mateus, this palace is the birthplace of the famous Mateus Rosé wine. A masterpiece of 18th-century Baroque architecture, it was designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, being one of the most elegant mansions in Europe of its time.

One of the most impressive attractions of Mateus Palace is its fanciful garden, adorned with geometric hedge formations, sculpted statues, and a serene cypress walkway. This visit promises to enchant our senses, offering a unique experience of immersion in Portugal’s history and artistic beauty. Tickets for this visit are not included in the tour.
