History and architecture

A Porto landmark since 1906

Livraria Lello opened on 13 January 1906 on Rua das Carmelitas in central Porto. Architect Francisco Xavier Esteves designed its historic building, whose Neo-Gothic structure is enriched by details associated with Art Nouveau and Art Deco. It is memorable architecture, but the setting remains a working bookshop, where shelves, books and cultural programming sit alongside the visitor experience.

The story reaches further back: in 1894, the Lello brothers acquired the publishing house founded by Ernesto Chardron. That literary legacy preceded the bookshop by twelve years and helps explain why Livraria Lello is more than a photo stop: its architecture and the life of books belong together.

Details to notice

The crimson staircase and stained glass

The staircase is one of Livraria Lello’s most recognisable features. It is a concrete structure—among the first of its kind built in Portugal—finished with painted stucco that gives it the appearance of carved wood. Its colour came about unexpectedly: during conservation work in 1993, a staircase that had been brown was mistakenly painted red. Sculptor José Rodrigues admired the result, and the crimson finish stayed.

Look upward too. Dutch artist Samuel Van Krieken designed the stained-glass skylight, which bears the words Decus in Labore, or “Dignity in Work”. Its coloured glass shifts with daylight; carved figures, shelves and decorative details reward a slower look.

Visitor planning

A wider cultural visit in 2026

Livraria Lello expanded in 2026 with a new wing designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira. The combined experience now approaches 1,000 m² and adds accessible routes, exhibition spaces, an auditorium and year-round cultural programming. The historic bookshop remains the beginning of the visit; the new wing extends it into contemporary art and literature rather than reproducing the original interior.

Check the official site for current ticket-voucher terms, availability, opening details and access guidance. Its visitor FAQ says suitcases and travel backpacks are not permitted. The address is Rua das Carmelitas, 144, Porto. For a wider route, read our Porto in one day guide.
