AT A GLANCE
Braga is Portugal’s spiritual heart: a layered baroque jewel of ancient faith and student vibrancy
Braga wears its centuries lightly. Portugal’s oldest city was already a bustling Roman capital when Lisbon was little more than a settlement. Its layered heritage — early Christian sanctuaries, Baroque staircases and medieval lanes — makes it one of the most rewarding day trips from Porto.
Why visit Braga
Travel essentials
HISTORIC CORE
The Cathedral and the Old Quarter: Nine Centuries of Living Faith
The Sé de Braga is the oldest cathedral in Portugal, founded shortly after the Christian Reconquest in the 11th century. Its façade layers Romanesque solidity with Gothic and Baroque additions accumulated across six hundred years. Inside, the ornate choir stalls and the treasury — home to liturgical objects of extraordinary craftsmanship — reward a slow visit. Just outside, the Archbishop’s Palace and the Garden of Santa Bárbara offer a quiet counterpoint to the surrounding streets.
The historic centre radiates from the cathedral square. Rua do Souto and Rua Dom Diogo de Sousa lead past covered arcades, azulejo-tiled houses and independent bookshops. The Arco da Porta Nova, an 18th-century triumphal arch, marks the gateway between the old city and the lower commercial streets.

Key stops in central Braga
Braga’s historic centre is largely pedestrianised, making it ideal for relaxed exploration on foot.
BAROQUE MASTERPIECE
Bom Jesus do Monte: The Sacred Hilltop Staircase
No image of Braga is complete without Bom Jesus do Monte, the hilltop sanctuary three kilometres east of the city. The zigzagging Baroque staircase — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — rises 116 metres through fountains, chapels and allegorical statues representing the Five Senses, the Three Virtues and the Stations of the Cross.
At the summit, the 18th-century neoclassical church stands above landscaped gardens and a panoramic viewpoint over the Minho lowlands. The surrounding parkland makes an ideal place for a slow morning before the crowds arrive. Visitors can also experience the historic water-balanced funicular, the oldest of its kind in the world.

Highlights of Bom Jesus
Visit in early morning or late afternoon for the softest light across the granite staircases.

OUR RECOMMENDATION
Discover the Minho with door-to-door comfort and local expertise
Braga’s finest treasures are divided between the pedestrianised medieval downtown and steep hilltop sanctuaries like Bom Jesus do Monte and Sameiro, located several kilometers outside the center. Navigating public transit between these sites consumes valuable time, while parking near medieval monuments can be frustrating.
With a private chauffeur-driven tour from Walkborder, your driver drops you directly at each landmark’s entrance, handles all parking and navigation, and customises your day to include Guimarães or the Minho countryside as you prefer.
