Oporto City

Oporto City  a beautiful city, located by the river Douro in Portugal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its monuments and historical buildings, such as the Cathedral or the Tower of Clerics. Oporto is the second largest city in Portugal and has beautiful views of the Port Wine Cellars, on the opposite bank of the river, in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Oporto district is filled with beautiful villages and thriving cities. Along the coast, you can take a break in the city and take a dip in Espinho, taste tasty fish in Matosinhos. Inland, the beautiful city of Amarante, known for its delicious pastry, where you can take a stroll along the banks of the river Tâmega.

Cathedral

The imposing Oporto Cathedral o was completed in the 13th century (18), although it has undergone many changes over the centuries. With beautiful carvings, paintings, sculptures, sacred art treasures and a Romanesque rosacea, as well as the beautiful Baptismal Chapel, and beautiful baroque tiles in the cloister and porch, this is undoubtedly a fascinating monument.

Clerigos Tower

This bell tower of Baroque style was completed in 1763 and dominates the old center of the city. It is the tallest of its kind in the country, and visitors can climb their 225 steps to admire the views.

Casa da Musica

Built for the Oporto Capital of European Culture in 2001, Casa da Musica is a dynamic and modern concert hall dedicated to the creation and celebration of music. It is also an important cultural center with guided tours a restaurant and several bars where tourists can relax.

Port Wine cellars in Gaia

Standing in front of Oporto’s historic center on the southern bank of the Douro River, the Port Wine Cellars are an important tourist attraction. This sweet and fortified wine is produced from the grapes grown in the Douro region and sent to the cellars.

Some Typical Dishes:

Francesinha 

One of the Oporto gastronomic symbols, it is certainly Francesinha. This dish is actually a sandwich made with loaf of bread, stuffed with sausage, grilled steak, fresh sausage, ham, and melted cheese. It comes garnished with a special sauce based on tomato, beer and spicy sauce – the crisp and starry egg on the top of Francesinha, is optional.

Codfish

There is a huge variety of cod recipes; Bacalhau a Gomes Sa,  Bras, Bacalhau a Ze do Pipo, Bacalhau a Lagareiro, among others

Green soup

A recipe from the Minho region that conquered the Portuguese. It has a characteristic flavor, being prepared with potatoes, cabbage and accompanied by chorizo and olive oil. It is also very typical of the feasts of St. John.

Tripas a Moda do Porto

Made with beans and various types of meat, the dish is enjoyed with plenty of seasoning and served hot. Its more traditional recipe carries veal guts, meat sausage, shoulder, bacon or ham, , pork, chicken, lard, beans, vegetables and various seasonings.
