This institution is dedicated to educating the public about the horrors of the <strong>Nazi regime<\/strong>, preserving the memory of the <strong>millions of Jewish victims<\/strong>, and ensuring that history is not forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/tours.com.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Museu-do-Holocausto-1--1024x768.png\" alt=\"Museu do Holocausto\" class=\"wp-image-1034\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:700px;height:400px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>During <strong>World War II<\/strong>, Adolf Hitler\u2019s <strong>Nazi regime<\/strong> orchestrated the systematic genocide of <strong>5.7 million Jews<\/strong>, including <strong>500,000 children<\/strong>. This atrocity remains one of the <strong>most horrific crimes in human history<\/strong>, known as the <strong>Holocaust<\/strong> or <strong>Shoah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum was originally scheduled to open on <strong>January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day<\/strong>, but its inauguration was postponed due to Portugal\u2019s <strong>second national lockdown<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/tours.com.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Museu-do-Holocausto-2--1024x641.jpeg\" alt=\"Holocaust Museum: A Place of Remembrance and Education\" class=\"wp-image-1037\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:700px;height:400px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.comunidade-israelita-porto.org\/x#0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Jewish Community of Porto<\/a> (CJP)<\/strong>, which developed the museum, designed it to <strong>portray Jewish life before the Holocaust<\/strong>, covering topics such as the <strong>rise of Nazism, Nazi expansion across Europe, the ghettos, refugees, concentration camps, forced labor, extermination, the Final Solution, death marches, liberation, post-war Jewish communities, and the founding of the State of Israel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Holocaust Museum: A Place of Remembrance and Education<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Holocaust Museum in Porto features a <strong>faithful reproduction of Auschwitz concentration camp dormitories<\/strong>, a <strong>room of names<\/strong>, a <strong>flame memorial<\/strong>, a <strong>cinema<\/strong>, a <strong>conference room<\/strong>, a <strong>research center<\/strong>, and <strong>exhibits of photographs and videos<\/strong> that document the events leading up to and following the Holocaust. Similar to the <strong>Washington D.C. Holocaust Museum<\/strong>, it provides <strong>a deep and emotional experience<\/strong> for visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/tours.com.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Museu-do-Holocausto-3--1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"Holocaust Museum: A Place of Remembrance and Education\" class=\"wp-image-1040\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:700px;height:400px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The museum is managed by members of <strong>the Jewish Community of <a href=\"https:\/\/tours.com.pt\/destinations\/tours-in-porto\/porto-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Porto\">Porto<\/a><\/strong>, whose parents, grandparents, and relatives were <strong>Holocaust survivors or victims<\/strong>. It has established <strong>collaborations with Holocaust museums in Moscow, Hong Kong, the United States, and across Europe<\/strong>, ensuring that <strong>this memory is never erased<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/tours.com.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/MuseudoHolocausto2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18928\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:700px;height:400px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Since 2013, the <strong>Jewish Community of Porto<\/strong> has contributed its <strong>refugee archives<\/strong> to the <strong>Washington D.C. Holocaust Museum<\/strong>, documenting the stories of <strong>Jewish refugees who passed through Porto during the war<\/strong>. Now, these archives have returned to Porto, including <strong>official documents, testimonies, letters, and hundreds of individual records<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the many stories told in the museum, visitors learn about <strong>Lu\u00edsa Finkelstein<\/strong>, who remembers her relatives being shot after being forced to dig their own mass grave. The <strong>grandparents of Michael Rothwell<\/strong> were <strong>deported to Auschwitz in 1943<\/strong>, and <strong>Jonathan Lackman<\/strong> shares memories of his grandfather, who <strong>escaped from Treblinka<\/strong>, and his grandmother, who was <strong>rescued with typhus from Bergen-Belsen<\/strong>, the camp where <strong>Anne Frank died<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Holocaust Museum in Porto opened its doors on April 5, 2021, marking the first Holocaust museum in the Iberian Peninsula.
