Tour Natural Park of Geres

The Gerês Natural Park is the only national park in the Portugal, classified as a World Biosphere Reserve, by UNESCO, with more than 70 thousand hectares of dispersed area in the North of Portugal.

A small portion with an elevation above 1,500 meters in altitude due to granitic mountains that make that landscape unique, most of the mountains have been humanized, with traces of human intervention since the Neolithic today, the Park has 114 villages where around ten thousand people live, mainly women and elderly people who work in agriculture, pastoralism and livestock.

The village of Soajo, where small granite houses draw its narrow streets, all of them have been open to the pillory in the wide National Monument since 1910, an anthropomorphic face inscribed, crowned with a triangle at the top, which reminds us of a hat with three tips

On the outskirts of the houses, at the highest point we have the common threshing floor, where the 24 community granaries in stone, dating from the 16th century. XVIII and XIX, here the community kept the cereals, especially the corn, quite abundant in this region. At the top, the crosses represent divine protection and the survival of the community, “our daily bread”.

The Landscape

The nature and orientation of the relief, altitude variations and Atlantic, Mediterranean and continental influences contribute to a great variety and richness of the vegetal cover: oaks and pine forests, birch or birch woods, abundant vegetation bordering the water lines.

The forests, Albergaria, Cabril, the entire upper valley of Serra do Geres itself are a type of landscape that can hardly be found in Portugal comparable.

Animal Species

The Brown bear and the mountain goat the wolf, the royal eagle pontificates in the vast courtship of the birds. Several mammals, diversity of reptiles and amphibians and a fauna, fishery including Trout and Salmon enrich the zoo picture.

There history

Among the Castles of Castro Laboreiro and Lindoso, megalithic monuments and testimonies of Roman occupation. Geira, the ancient road that led the legionaries from Bracara Augusta to Astorga, survives on a stretch of the old sidewalk and in the curious milestones.

Architecture of the terraces, parishes of granaries, the freshness of the meadows of lime, animate a picture in which the rurality is still very present. In this bridge was fought an important battle against the French when the invasions, in which the popular ones were victorious.

Thus defeating the French army Geres where everything is conjugated so that nothing is lacking in its grandeur and perfection.

“Portugal from one end to the other”

I found BoardWalk in an internet search and after getting a quote, very reasonable price wise, I called Hugo and discussed the program with him He was very professional and conveyed the proper attitude, so I booked five different tours Lisbon and surroundings.Hugo offered airport transfer to our destination as a courtesy On the appointed date Hugo was at the airport and we were extremely and pleasantly surprised to meet him The next five days were real delight Hugo was always ahead of the meeting time, car was clean and Hugo was always in a good mood, funny and always helpful We decided to cancel our car rental and go with Hugo to Porto, via Belmonte and Reguas, and from there to Algarve for three days
In all we were with Hugo for 10 days and covered Portugal from one end to the other
Hugo made the trip an easy one full of discoveries and no hassles
I strongly recommend Hugo and his company.
In my next trip to Portugal I will certainly hire him again.

I found this company here at Trip Advisor and the reviews made me hire them for one day tour in Sintra, Cascais, Estoril and Queluz.
I discussed everything through email and got tour descriptions from their website. Everything went smoothly, I didn’t have any problems.
I chose to hire a private tour because I was traveling with my parents, they are very old now, and get tired quite easily and our guide Paulo, was fantastic!! There’s no other word to describe him, very polite, educated, patient, knows a lot about Portugal and didn’t pressure us regarding the time.
If you are interested in hire a private tour, I recommend the Walkborder Tours, they are always clear about the prices, the tours, what is included and what is not, no caveats at all.

Three of us were in Lisbon prior to a cruise and booked a tour of the city and Belem area with Walkborder. I had been to Lisbon before but had not stayed in the city so wanted to spend more time there.

Carlos was a fantastic guide. He showed us the city, including some interesting out of the way places not seen by everyone. Then he took us out to Belem to see the monastery and have the famous and delicious pastel de natas.

Carlos has a very easy manner and good sense of humor. You can tell he is a people person and enjoys his job. We were given a lot of interesting (and some unusual) information but not too overloaded with details. All three of us loved the tour and especially enjoyed our time with Carlos.

I would definitely book again with Walkborder when I return to

I’m very glad to have used Walkborder Tours throughout our entire visit in Portugal, from pick up and drop off at the airport and tours in Lisbon and Oporto. The booking process was very easy and was done all through email, I didn’t have to call anyone to follow up and I always received a speedy response to every question I had. Payment process was also very easy through PayPal. Our driver/guide, Ricardo , is very professional, charismatic, friendly and easy-going, which is pretty important since this company tries to assign you the same driver for the entire trip duration. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again!
